What this tool actually does

Most tax tools either ask you 30 questions before they'll show you anything, or hide the answer behind an account. This one doesn't. You enter your Box 1 (wages) and Box 2 (federal tax withheld) from your W-2, answer a few quick questions, and you get a clear answer: refund, even, or owe.

If you're getting a big refund, that's not a win — it means your withholding is too high all year. We'll point you at W-4 Easy Guide to fix it for next year. If you owe, same idea — increase Step 4(c) on your W-4 so this doesn't happen again.

What it covers — and what it doesn't

Built for the 80% of W-2 earners. Covered: single, married filing jointly (one or two W-2s), head of household; up to $500K household income; optional self-employment income up to $100K; the standard deduction; the Child Tax Credit and Credit for Other Dependents.

Not covered (we'll point you to the IRS Estimator): three or more W-2 jobs, multi-state income, foreign income, itemized deductions, stock-grant surprises, or income above $500K.
